For many of us, it happens almost automatically. We choose what to wear, fasten a few buttons, pull up a zipper, put on our shoes and move on with the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some older adults, however, getting dressed can become a lengthy and exhausting process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A small button may repeatedly slip between stiff fingers. A metal zipper may be too difficult to grasp. Raising an arm to put on a shirt may cause discomfort, while bending to pull on socks or fasten shoes may feel unsafe. What once took a few minutes can take half an hour, consuming energy and patience before the day has properly begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difficulty is not always visible to other people. A senior may eventually emerge fully dressed, while no one sees the frustration, fatigue or quiet loss of confidence that came before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clothing should help someone begin their day. It should not become a barrier to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Getting Dressed Can Become Difficult<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional clothing often requires more strength, balance, flexibility and fine finger movement than we realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buttons depend on grip and finger coordination. Small zipper pulls require pinching. Some shirts must be pulled over the head, while trousers may require bending, balancing and repeated adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These movements can become more difficult for someone experiencing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arthritis, pain or stiffness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced grip strength or finger dexterity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tremors or changes in coordination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited shoulder, hip or knee movement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weakness following an illness, injury or hospitalization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vision changes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue or shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes in memory, sequencing or problem-solving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty dressing while seated or using a wheelchair<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pain, swelling and reduced dexterity can make ordinary buttons and zippers particularly difficult to manage. Simple devices such as zipper pulls and button hooks, along with alternative fasteners, can reduce the strain placed on the fingers. <a href=\"https:\/\/arthritis.ca\/treatment\/pain-management\/assistive-devices-resource\/\">Arthritis Society Canada<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sudden or unexplained change in someone\u2019s ability to dress should not simply be attributed to aging. It may be appropriate to speak with a healthcare professional, particularly when the change is accompanied by new weakness, pain, confusion, dizziness or difficulty moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Adaptive Clothing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adaptive clothing is designed to make dressing easier, safer or more comfortable for people experiencing changes in movement, dexterity or cognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not have to look medical or institutional. Many adaptive garments resemble ordinary clothing but include thoughtfully designed features such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hook-and-loop fasteners concealed behind decorative buttons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snaps that are easier to manage than traditional buttons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large zipper pulls that do not require a tight pinch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elastic or adjustable waistbands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wider openings for arms, legs or the neck<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Side-opening or open-back designs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull-on trousers and tops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy-access designs for personal care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flat seams, soft fabrics and removable tags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clothing designed for comfortable seated wear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Button hooks, zipper pulls and long-handled shoehorns may also make existing clothing easier to use without replacing an entire wardrobe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The right choice depends on the person. Someone with stiff fingers may benefit from easier fasteners, while someone with limited shoulder movement may need a shirt that does not have to be pulled over the head. A person who dresses while seated may need clothing designed differently from someone who can stand safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If magnetic fasteners are being considered, anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator or another implanted medical device should first check the device instructions or consult an appropriate healthcare professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Goal Is Participation, Not Simply Speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adaptive clothing is sometimes presented as a way for caregivers to complete dressing more quickly. Saving time can certainly reduce frustration, but speed should not be the only goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more important question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How can we help the person continue doing as much as they safely can?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A caregiver may be able to button a shirt in seconds. That does not automatically mean they should take over the entire task. If the person can choose their clothing, guide an arm into a sleeve, close an easier fastener or pull up an elastic waistband, those abilities should be encouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The caregiver can prepare the clothing, offer one step at a time, provide gentle direction and assist only where assistance is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach may still require patience. However, it protects more than physical ability. It can protect confidence, dignity and the feeling of remaining involved in one\u2019s own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good care does not measure success only by whether the person became dressed. It also considers whether the person participated, whether their choices were respected and whether the process left them ready for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Time for the Life Beyond the Task<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a caregiver and client spending thirty minutes struggling with small buttons, a difficult zipper and tightly fastened shoes. By the time they finish, the client is tired and the available time for a walk has disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now imagine the same morning with clothing that is easier to manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The client selects the outfit and closes the accessible fasteners with gentle encouragement. The caregiver assists with one difficult step. They finish without a prolonged struggle and still have time to walk outside, enjoy a cup of tea or sit together in conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of adaptive clothing is not simply to make caregiving more efficient. It is to prevent one demanding task from consuming the time and energy that could have been used for something meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less time struggling can mean more time moving, connecting and living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choosing the Right Clothing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before purchasing adaptive clothing, consider the person\u2019s daily experience rather than choosing a product based only on its label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which part of getting dressed causes the most difficulty?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does the person usually dress while standing or seated?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can they use both hands comfortably?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are buttons, zippers, sleeves, waistbands or footwear causing the problem?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does the person need assistance with toileting or personal care?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the fabric comfortable against sensitive skin?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the clothing easy to wash and durable enough for regular use?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does it reflect the person\u2019s taste and identity?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the person operate the fasteners independently after some practice?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever possible, involve the person in the decision. Adaptive clothing will not support independence if they dislike how it looks, find it uncomfortable or feel that it was imposed upon them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An occupational therapist may also help identify dressing techniques, assistive devices or clothing adaptations suited to the person\u2019s specific abilities and environment. Occupational therapy and adaptive equipment are commonly used to support independence in everyday activities such as dressing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/tampa-health-care\/locations\/james-a-haley-veterans-hospital\/\">U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Small Change With a Larger Meaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Independence is not always preserved through dramatic interventions. Sometimes it is protected through a larger zipper pull, an easier waistband or a shirt that closes without a struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These changes may appear small from the outside. To the person getting dressed, they can mean beginning the day with less frustration, requiring less hands-on assistance and retaining greater control over a deeply personal routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clothing should not take the morning away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should help someone get ready for the life waiting beyond the bedroom door.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getting dressed is one of the first tasks of the day.
