According to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of PD has doubled in the past 25 years, with global estimates showing over&nbsp;8.5 million individuals living with Parkinson\u2019s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Characterized by motor symptoms like tremors, rigidity and slowness of movement, as well as non-motor symptoms like depression, sleep disturbances and cognitive decline, Parkinson\u2019s is a deeply personal journey that affects the individual as well as their loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>April is&nbsp;Parkinson\u2019s Awareness Month, an ideal time to look at ways that caregivers can help older adults with Parkinson\u2019s to sustain a fulfilling life with compassion, dignity and emotional support.&nbsp; We have compiled a guide to help caregivers and family members to understand how person-centered care respects individual preferences and enhances quality of life beyond simply symptom management alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to help older adults with Parkinson\u2019s disease is to utilize effective communication tools.&nbsp; As the disease progresses, communication can become increasingly difficult, resulting in challenges for the person living with the disease as well as the caregiver. Facial expressions, body language, speech and cognitive changes all contribute to conversations becoming different.&nbsp; With patience, understanding and the right strategies, communication can be achieved.&nbsp; It is effective for caregivers to employ techniques like:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use simple language: Clear enunciation and short sentences can make conversation easier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Face-to-face interaction: Maintain eye contact and give the person time to process and respond.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use yes \/ no questions: Simplify communication in advanced stages by using closed-ended questions or written prompts.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Person-centered care empowers both individuals with Parkinson\u2019s disease and their caregivers. By prioritizing dignity, emotional well-being, and meaningful connections, caregivers can enhance the quality of life for their loved ones.
