Understanding the Stages of Lewy Body Dementia

Have you heard of Lewy Body Dementia?

Lewy Body Dementia or LBD is not as well-known as Alzheimer’s disease but as the third leading form of dementia, it has impacted so many families. It is important to have a better understanding of what to expect, the progression of the disease, and how to provide dementia care for a loved one who is diagnosed with LBD.

Although every person with LBD will have different symptoms to start, the universal themes include changes in behavior, movement, sleep and thinking. These can include:

  • Cognitive shifts that impact alertness, attention or concentration.
  • Decline in problem solving, decision making, memory, planning and analytical skills.
  • Movement changes including tremors, balance issues, rigidity and a shuffling gait.
  • Autonomic symptoms including issues with temperature, blood pressure regulation, urinary incontinence and fainting.
  • Hallucinations, changes in mood or delusions.
  • Sleep disorders including excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, restless leg syndrome and REM sleep behavior disorder.

A comprehensive LBD checklist of possible symptoms can help if you feel a loved one may be at risk or is exhibiting symptoms. This resource can make speaking with their doctor about your concerns an easier process.

At ComForCare, we offer in-home dementia care services tailored to a loved one’s needs at each stage of LBD.
